Nether hub?

I figured that next reset, we could all work together and build a nether portal hub. This would make access to public farms, shops, and points of interest way easier. It would be really nice to have this as a feature we all work on and that once the world resets that we can construct some sort of public transport.

I really like the idea, and think that it would be an awesome project, BUT (there's always a "but") it would be hard considering the map size. Maybe we could create some sort of railway system, but considering the world is spread over around 22-23 thousand blocks, the portals would be spread out and it would be hard to organize them all together.

I don't think it would be too massive a project. Let's do some estimating, shall we?

The world is ±15000 blocks in the x and z directions. That means that the distance from the centre (where the hub would be) to either of the corners is 30000 blocks. Since nether distance is one-eight of overworld distance, that's 3750 blocks in the nether. Now, that's the extreme, so we halve that: 1875. But because this is in two dimensions, there are more things further that that distance than that there are closer by. On the other hand, it's likely that some people build close-ish to spawn, reducing the average again. So, let's put our nether distance at 2112 blocks. That's 32 stacks of normal rail, and 1 stack of powered rail to keep the minecart up to speed. Which, in turn, requires 12 stacks of iron, and 1 stack of gold. That's a lot, but not too difficult to obtain. Now, that's for one connection, but as the number of connections go up, parts of routes can be re-used.

If development starts not too long into the new map, we can have a fairly complete nether-rail network by the end of the map.

Just as an FYI. The worldborder in the nether is +/- 15K but any portal beyond the point of around 2K will send you backwards and you cannot then get back to these portals unless you walk again, meaning the only areas you need a nether hub in is the specified 2K

Many thanks,

Well, I don't think it would be useful to have a portal in the nether that corresponds to a place in the overworld that cannot be reached because it's outside the worldborder, but thanks for the warning anyway.

Neat that you took the time to do the math. If we all worked on it, we could connect our portals and have a nether hub. I think it's a great idea, but there are some people that don't want to be connected to others.

They don't have to. If we build our rail-tunnels in the top layers of the nether, we can go right past some peoples base and nether outpost, without anyone knowing.

Do you suggest asking around for who wants to be connected then making a nether hub that connects to everyone next reset?

A person must give you permission to be connected to the nether hub, that's not an option. With this in mind, I have made a nether hub of sorts on this map at y 118 at 0,0 portal. While I did not finish this, it does connect to all of my own portals and some others. Something like this should be replicated for a nether hub, as people have to put their portals in the ceiling which  is out of the way of other players portals.

Many thanks,

- Flare

I do believe Forest meant to say "connects to everyone who wants to be connected"...

Sorry I was unclear, I meant asking people if they wanted to be connected to the nether hub before reset, then after reset we could connect those people so we can get started right after we get the supplies needed.

I'd be happy to help and be involved in that project. Just let me know when you guys start it. Though do keep in mind this is just a temporary map. :}

That would be most useful, thank you in advance for the help.

That had not yet transpired when these posts were made. I still want to continue it, though perhaps not as extensive as with a full map.
