Building a road: connecting towns?

Hello all!

I've started to work on building roads on the map. I plan to make at least one road from spawn to map-edge, and maybe more than that. Now I wonder: are there towns, settlements, and other large-ish structures that would like to be on the road, so I can try to route along them? Currently working in the positive-x, positive-z corner of the map.

While this project sounds ambitious it has caused issues in the past.

Some players do not appreciate a road going past their property which can potentially lead griefers and other players building near them to mess up their base plans.  In the past we have had players attempt to make train stations and roads which we have had to ask them to remove due to the builders not getting permission from all the players that it effects and which, on multiple instances, were left half built and were constantly getting griefed.

If you do get some interest players please make sure that the path you take does not come too close to other player builds.

Thank you pegasus, for putting that out for me and all other prospective road-builders.

However, I wonder how it applies to the area around spawn. There's lots more building going on around there, and since it is close to spawn prospective griefers don't need the road anyway. It's not that I plan to plow through someone's front-yard without permission, it's just that "base shouldn't be visible from road" is a tad bit difficult to achieve over there.

The situation in Center spawn is different than other areas. It was not intended to be used as private housing and if they built there they did so knowing full well they would be getting heavy traffic.   It is why the shops were put there by players so that it was easier to access.

The project you propose is to extend paths into the outer borders of the map where players go to escape the heavy traffic.  There is a reason players, like myself, go right to the border and work back in until we find a place to settle.  It is to have the freedom to change our area without impediment.

Projects like yours in the past have led to player complaints as follows

  1. Players being blocked by rail or paths in areas they intended to build or extend their claim
  2. Private players or communities being bombarded with other players that want to live in "towns" and get the wrong idea.
  3. Players moving or destroying roads/rails because they were inconveniently located.

There have been many attempts and all of the ones that originate from center spawn have ended up being eyesores as they are constantly being adjusted, griefed, removed and ultimately get abandoned.

With the land claim we currently have on this map the issue is going to be even more complicated.  Not only will you have to either work around massive land structures or plowing through them and destroying locations new players would otherwise like to build in you would have to navigate around any land claims you will encounter.  If anyone of these players complains about your building too close to a claim we will be obligated to negotiate removal or relocation which means more work for us and you.

That essentially answers my question, thank you.

1. You were very clear in your first post. I will ask for permission before building next to a base. The standard being: "without permission, work of others shouldn't be visible from the road." (excepting the central spawn area)

2. As I said, I ask for permission beforehand, so if a community doesn't want that to happen, they just say no, and the road goes elsewhere.

3. If a stretch of road gets destroyed, well, bad luck for me, I'll have to rebuild. I promise not to yell grief when that happens. As for other players moving my road: I don't see the problem with that, unless you are thinking of the case where they then move it right next to a third player's base, who then isn't amused with it. But how likely is that to happen?

There have been many attempts and all of the ones that originate from center spawn have ended up being eyesores as they are constantly being adjusted, griefed, removed and ultimately get abandoned.

So you suggest I give up before starting?

As I said, I won't build it right next to a claim. (excepting the central spawn area)

Not at all.  Just sharing some insight to some of the issues you may face with such a project.  The more information you have before will hopefully save you from some of the pitfalls that befell previous ambitions projects such as yours.
